Hi, guys, I'm Nouhaila from Speaking English With Noha and in this lesson, we will talk about how to choose American English or British English. Do you need to know the difference? Which one is right? Which one should you use? And which one should I use?

These are all questions my students ask me all the time! And in this post, I will answer it for you.

So the first question.

Do you need to know the difference between American and British English?

Well, you should know that there are differences. There are some rules of spelling, grammar and, of course, different accents and vocabulary. You need to know that there are these differences, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you need to study and learn them.

The truth is that all Anglophones understand each other, despite the differences in English. We watch each other's films, we read each other's books, we work with each other, we read each other's news. So we are often exposed to the different words and spellings that other English speakers use... which brings me to the next question.

Do you have to worry about the differences between American and British English?

Maybe. It depends on why you are learning English. You only have to worry about differences if you are studying for an English exam, applying for an English university, studying at an English university or using English professionally for your work.

Usually, in these situations, you must pay attention to spelling and grammar rules, as this can affect your score or even your reputation. So, if this is like you, you absolutely must determine whether British English or American English is the right choice for you.

So which one is right? Which one should you use?

That's a difficult question for me to answer. You have to think about yourself and your situation.

But you may be considering studying in an English-speaking country. Which one? If this is America, you should practice learning American English. But if not, focus on British English, as most English-speaking countries have grammar and spelling standards in British English.

Do you talk to many American or British customers or colleagues? This can help you decide whether you should study American English or British English. You may think that one type of English is easier than the other and that it can also tell you which one you should study. You can choose any of these reasons to help you choose the type of English you want to study.

It makes perfect sense to focus on lessons, books, and teachers who use only one type of English. This simply makes it a little less confusing while you learn.

So focus either on British or American English, but remember that the other exists. You don't have to choose one and then never use the other. In fact, it's almost impossible!

And one is no more important than the other. But for you, there is probably one that best suits your situation. And this is the one you should focus on, the one you should study.

What type of English do I use?

Finally, it is important for you to know that some Anglophones are very protective of their language and will argue about which solution is right or wrong.

But most of you don't need to worry about this conversation, these arguments and these discussions to know which English is the best or which English is the good or the bad. The important thing for you is to continue to develop your English skills and practice communicating clearly and confidently. Accept the fact that there are different types of English and that this is no reason to be stressed or anxious. That's the way it is.

The most important thing is that you focus on communicating your ideas and feelings clearly in English. But I think it is important to know the differences between British and American English so that you can recognize them.
