5 Common Expressions with CATCH

We will simply focus on the words that are often used with "catch" in English. Well, you've probably heard of the verb'catch', haven't you? But did you know that you can catch a cold? That you can catch fire? Or catch a breath of something?
1. catch a cold
If you catch a cold, it means you are sick. You can get the flu, catch a virus or any type of airborne disease. It's something you can catch.
My throat's starting to hurt, I think I caught a cold.
You can also catch what someone said. Or not understand if you haven't heard them correctly.
Did you catch what he just said?
2. catch a whiff
I just caught a whiff of something delicious! Can you feel it?
If you smell something, it means you can smell something. Now, it could be something good, like a freshly baked cake or a loaf of bread, but it could also be bad.
When I walked past his room, I caught a whiff of his dirty sports clothes.
3. catch (someone’s) eye
Now, if something 3. catch your eye, it attracts your attention. You are curious and interested. It's something you want or want.
A cute little coffee on the corner caught my attention when I was walking by. I would like to go there for lunch sometime.
I think the guy who made your coffee this morning got your attention.
Now note that this expression is used, often used, with past times or perfect, because it is generally unexpected, it is a surprise. Very often, you report something after it has happened.
4. catch (someone's) attention
Now, there is a very subtle difference between attracting someone's attention and attracting someone's attention.
Hey hey hey! Are you still listening? I do something to make you look, I do something to make you look and look at me. I'm trying to get your attention. I'm trying to interest you in this lesson and it's a deliberate action. I'm trying to get your attention.
We created the ad to be really catchy.

We use "catch" to say goodbye informally.
